A Ministry of Defence investigation is under way after an artillery round went way off course on Army firing ranges, flew over two Wiltshire villages and exploded after thudding into a farmer’s field.The round landed at Patney, near Devizes, 300 metres from the Paddington-Penzance railway line, leaving a crater six feet in diameter and two feet deep. £103.5 million pothole repair fund for roads damaged by…
Councils are to get an additional £140 million to fix roads damaged by England’s record wettest winter, the Government announced.
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said a fund specifically targeting the worst-hit areas would be raised by £36.5 million to £80 million.
All councils will also share in a £103.5 million boost to the money available for fixing potholes and other dangers facing drivers.

The amount ships using UK ports have to pay for lighthouse provision is to be reduced this year and possibly next year as well. Transport minister Stephen Hammond said the annual reduction for 2014/15 for each ship is 1p per net registered tonne. With some large vessels regularly using UK ports, the reduction will amount to hundreds of pounds per ship. Mr Hammond also said he intended to reduce the amount paid – known as light dues – for 2015/16 as well.
