Port tax goes on and off and on and off…
The amount ships using UK ports have to pay for lighthouse provision is to be reduced this year and possibly next year as well. Transport minister Stephen Hammond said the annual reduction for 2014/15 for each ship is 1p per net registered tonne. With some large vessels regularly using UK ports, the reduction will amount to hundreds of pounds per ship. Mr Hammond also said he intended to reduce the amount paid – known as light dues – for 2015/16 as well.
