METALLICA were only officially asked to play Glastonbury Festival last week, says rival festival Sonisphere after it was announced the US metal band were to headline the Pyramid Stage.

Metallica is playing at Sonisphere at Knebworth the week after their Saturday performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

The Metallica announcement for Glastonbury Festival came on Wednesday, the evening before the deadline to get refunds for tickets.
