Great Western mainline electrification project 'a farce'
One of the biggest infrastructure projects the West of England has ever seen has descended into “a farce and a nightmare” after running into a series of problems.
Work to electrify the Great Western mainlines to the region from London is under way in earnest across Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, but is causing main roads across the area to be closed for months, with alternative routes “wrecked”, and a growing list of complaints, delays and struggling businesses.

Man dies in crash on A356 near Crewkerne, Somerset
A 49-year-old man died in Somerset last night following a three-car crash at Turnpike Cross on the A356 between the A303 and Crewkerne.
The collision, which happened at around 5pm, involved a Vauxhall Corsa, a Renault Scenic and a Ford Transit van. The driver of the Corsa, a man from the local area, died in the collision.
A 29-year-old man, passenger in the Transit van, was taken to Yeovil District Hospital after suffering a dislocated shoulder and back injuries.
