In our second planning news story for Glastonbury today,
Mendip District Council has given the green light for a new hotel to be built
in the town.
As a result a £5 million three-story and 60 bed Premier Inn
hotel will be built on the Morlands Enterprise Park (the former Morlands
factory site) located to the south west of the town centre and will be joined
by a Brewer’s Fayre pub/restaurant which will be able to cater for 190 covers,
as well as providing adequate associated parking spaces.
It is expected that construction work on the projects which
were submitted by Whitbread Breweries who own the Premier Inn brand, the UK’s
largest hotel chain which already has over 580 hotels across the UK, in
conjunction with Bristol based developers Cubex Land, will commence later in
the year, and if all goes to plan the hotel and restaurant will be open in
early 2013 providing employment for 65 people.
The 10 acre site which had been derelict for many years
following the closure of the sheepskin factory and the Morlands and Baileys
tanneries in 1982 and 1992 was acquired by Cubex from the South West Regional
Development Agency with financial backing of fund management company, Palmer
Capital for an undisclosed sum in the middle of 2011.
As a result of this application being passed, it appears
that Cubex will now be securing another major occupier to the park.
Many think the news will be good for the town; attracting
visiting families on a budget to the area, while others are concerned that the
new hotel will harm the smaller bed and breakfast businesses in the town. What do you think? Let us know below.
The application can be viewed on the Mendip District Council
website here.
